Bushy shrubs with arching branches around 1.5 m long with a few prickles.
Dark green leaves have 5 toothed leaflets.
The cup-shaped fully double flowers are up to 10 cm across.
They have around 50 very deep red almost black velvety petals.
(They are also described as burgundy, wine red or claret.)
The outer petals are in rough whorls while the centre ones are roughly in 4 quarters
like many of the Old Garden roses.
They have a strong scent and are repeat bloomers.
