The vigorous bushy plants are 0.5 to 1.2 m high and slightly wider.
The stems have prickles.
Dark green deciduous leaves have 5 leaflets.
Flowers can be solitary but are typically in large clusters of up to 20.
They are small semi-doubles around 7 cm across with up to 15 petals.
Petals are a very bright red (vermilion).
The plants have some flowers on them throughout the year.
Cultivars come in orange-red, pink and white.
