Widespread in Australia, it grows on dead eucalypt trees where it causes white rot.
They may be solitary or form overlapping shelves of fruit bodies.
They are directly attached having no stalk.

Typically fan-shaped brackets are 10 to 20 (25) cm across and up to 3.5 cm thick.
On horizontal surfaces they can form thick crusts or amorphous masses.
Sometimes they are hoof-shaped.

The upper surface is concentrically ridged or irregular.
Pink to brown it is covered in coarse reddish-brown to dark brown hairs.
The hairs may be matted together in small clumps.
The usually paler margin is smooth and rounded.

The smooth lower surface is pinkish-mauve especially at the edge or pale brown around the pores.
There are 4 to 5 round or angular pores per mm.
The pore surface bruises to a dark mauve when touched.
The flesh has pink or mauve tints.
The spore print is white.
