6. Jelly fungi

Fungi > Division Basidiomycota > Subdivision Agaricomycotina.
Jelly fungi are in 4 Orders – the Auriculariales, Dacrymycetales, Sebacinales and Tremellales.

Jelly fungi are variously lobed or branched fruiting bodies with the consistency of jelly.
Size varies from a few mms to 10 cm high and they can cover several square cms.
They can be yellow, red, brown or a reddish-brown.

The spore-forming basidia cells are among hyphae in the surface layer of the fruiting body.
Just the tips project above the surface so they can release the spores.
The fertile areas may be dull compared to the often shiny surface of the sterile areas.
